House Preparations
This blog post is at the request of my husband. Poor guy, he has done so much work that no one will know about. His request wasn't for me to talk about him in any way, he's not that kind of guy. It was however to talk about how much work and preparation we have done to our house, and to thank everyone who has helped us or will help us out along the way! It has been quite a list and we aren't finished yet.
We have two extra bedrooms in our house, however even with just the two of us we had managed to fill them up. One we used as a craft/computer room. The other was more of a guest room with our extra t.v, futon bed, things like that. Well those things all had to go somewhere.... Hello basement re-do! The front part of our basement had been redone with paneling put up, carpeting put down, and a hot tub. Yes, you read that right, a hot tub in the basement. Now if the thing still worked, I would have been in heaven. Unfortunately it didn't, and no one could fix it. We finally found someone who knew how to fix it, only to find out that they no longer made parts for it... What to do with the monster? For a long time it just sat there. We didn't know what to do with it, but we knew that it would be a big job, and at the time it was much easier to just leave it. That was great until it was time to make room for baby!
After talking to a few pool companies and being told the same thing, we took the plunge. A good friend of ours came over and he and my husband destroyed the thing by sawing it into pieces. (It was much easier and quicker than we thought it would be) I happen to know the people that lived in our house who put the hot tub in. I contacted them and simply asked how. They got a good laugh, and told me that it involved cutting a trench in the ceiling and taking out the stairs! So glad we didn't have to go that route to get it out! Currently parts of it are still sitting on our patio. The garbage company will only take one additional item a week... So each week another part of the hot tub goes out to the curb, but hey it was a lot cheaper than renting a dumpster!
Then there was the issue of the carpeting. It was old, but I could've dealt with old. There had been some water damage from the hot tub so that added to the mess. However the people that were in our house right before us (oh that could take up a whole new blog series!) had multiple cats, and those cats were locked in the basement a lot. You can just imagine the smell! Well, I happen to love demolition so we ripped up the carpet ourselves! Lovely... The floor underneath is a mixture of tile, cement, carpet glue, carpet padding that won't come up, you name it. NASTY! So that has yet to be dealt with. We know a guy... but I'm thinking it will wait until summer. It's pretty expensive, and time consuming and currently time is not on our side. However we are making it work for now. We got some area rugs, covered a large majority of the floor and it's good enough for my craft space for now. And the way I figure it, it's not like we will have much extra time once the kids come anyway!
With the basement becoming usable again we were able to clear out one of the bedrooms completely. This will be the room that is totally ready for our next home study. A very good college friend of mine, who happened to be an art minor in college, lives close enough and was willing to come help me out. I had a dream for a Seuss room. I LOVE SEUSS, it's definitely an obsession. With things like google and pinterest it was easy enough to find what I wanted and to see people who had done it, however I am not that good. I love to DIY and craft and create, but my fine artistic abilities are quite limited. So I asked a favor. It is turning out BEAUTIFULLY! I can't wait until this next weekend when we finish it up. More pictures to follow when that happens!
We still have some small projects to finish, some organizing and sorting to be done, but overall things are really starting to come together. It's amazing how much we had to get done, and how much easier it was to do it than we thought it would be. I still don't feel like our house is big enough to house FIVE children, heck we don't have a vehicle that could take that many, but whatever the Lord gives us, we will be glad to accept!
