Why I get excited over a Swiffer refill, and other insights into our "changing life."

I discovered the Swiffer Refill hack and got SUPER excited. Instead of spending $7 per refill bottle I can now add some lysol and water and still use the convenience of my Swiffer! I think I shocked Tony by how excited I was. (He really didn't see the fascination at first. )

Here's the deal, it's become almost like a game to find ways to save money. We've opened up a new savings account to make sure that all of our saved funds are going directly to our adoption expenses. With fundraising, savings, and donations, we realized early on it was important to keep those funds separate from our other "daily life" funds. The other nice thing that this has done is give us a bit of a "reward" when we say "no." What do I mean? Well let me explain.

Tony and I have made a commitment to save everything we possibly can so that our adoption fees can be raised sooner. When we say no to something we want or would normally buy, we transfer that money into our new savings account. We would normally go out to eat or order out 3 times a week between lunches and dinners. Now we don't go out at all. Even when we are REALLY busy and tired we still cook at home, it may not be glamours dinners, but it is saving us money.

As some of you may know, I am a bit of a girly girl. I LOVE getting my nails done and getting pedicures, especially in the summer. But this summer that won't be happening. That is an easy $30+ every month to month and a half that can be saved now. I am a horrible finger picker because of my anxiety, getting my nails done wasn't so much for fun and relaxation as it was to stop myself from self harm, however that service adds up fast! $60 a month, I'll find other ways to deal. :) Focusing my energy on adoption fundraising and making a strategic plan is more important.

I'm also quite the shopper. I LOVE to shop, find deals, find new things, changing wardrobes with the seasons, changing home decor, love it! It's not necessary. There has been NO shopping outside of groceries and household products since we decided on this process and this agency. None, sorry Maurices, I'm cheating on you with another organization, Lifetime.

We also really love to go get ice cream in the summer. With having an ice cream shop 2 blocks from our house it would be nothing for us to walk down multiple times a week. While ice cream is cheaper than a full meal out, it's still money we don't need to spend. *(Bonus: Walmart has a whole carton of cotton candy ice-cream, which is my fave, for $1.92, waaaaay cheaper than my Time-Out ice-cream fix!)

We've also put in a garden this year to help save money on our grocery bill this summer and fall, and it gives us something fun to work on outside of fundraising. :)

Everything I've read about adoption funding and fundraising says that YOU as the family must be prepared to make sacrifices. We are game for this! As I've said before, it's almost like a game of "how can we find other ways to save money." Even small things like skipping a $2.00 package of donuts and eating breakfast at home adds up.
We are working, saving, and dreaming for the day when Baby Brown comes home for good. Hopefully, we can find even more ways to save soon! :)
